The Steel Research & Technology Mission of India (SRTMI) is a collaborative initiative between the Indian steel industry and academia, backed by the Ministry of Steel, Government of India, to drive innovation and research in the steel sector and bridge gaps between industry and academia for enhanced R&D.
To strengthen its impact, SRTMI introduced three new schemes on March 12, 2025, offering flexible collaboration opportunities for industry, academia, startups, and independent innovators:
Challenge Method – Addresses critical challenges in the steel industry, particularly in decarbonization and modernization. Fully funded by SRTMI.
Open Innovation Method – Supports new research proposals in collaboration with industries. SRTMI funds up to 60% of the project costs.
Startup Accelerator – Assists startups in developing innovative steel technologies. SRTMI funds up to 75% of the project costs.
A key component is the SRTMI Web Portal (www.srtmi.com), which streamlines funding applications and houses the SteelCollab Platform—a matchmaking tool for industry stakeholders and innovators to connect, post challenges, and showcase research.
SRTMI focuses on key areas such as Green Steel, Circular Economy, Advanced Steel, Industry 4.0 (AI/ML), Operational Excellence, and Indigenization of Capital Goods Manufacturing. The mission aims to make India a global hub for sustainable and technology-driven steel innovation.
